# Nauru, Tarawa and Kiritimati

> Route page: https://remoteatlas.tv/en/journeys/pacific/. A personal trip and a possible future journey stay separate. There are no prices or exact coordinates.

Nauru, Tarawa and Kiritimati are one route we have already travelled. A future trip is built around the inter-island flights and takes at least two weeks.

## What we saw.

The route we travelled: Fiji → Nauru → Tarawa → Kiritimati → Fiji

From Bangkok we travelled via Hong Kong and Fiji to Nauru. We explored the island by car, then continued to Tarawa and Kiritimati.

We flew from Nauru to Tarawa with Nauru Airlines. We spent about 3–4 days on Tarawa and hired a car, then took a direct flight to Kiritimati.

Fiji in the list of stops is the way there and back, not the Fiji islands programme.

## Kiribati

Tarawa runs along its lagoon: palms, houses, boats and a shallow shore. Betio is at the western end. In the Kiribati language the letters ti in these names sound like s: Betio is said “Beso”, Kiribati “Kiribas”, and Kiritimati “Kirismas”. Kiritimati lies much further east: the village of London sits on a narrow piece of land between lagoon and ocean. The English name Christmas Island comes from Christmas.

## Nauru

Drive around the island to see its coast and interior. The number of nights depends on the next suitable onward flight.

## Tarawa

Spend several days on the atoll, driving beside the lagoon and visiting villages and the ocean shore. Boat outings are arranged locally according to the weather.

## Kiritimati

The lagoon, settlements and a few unhurried days. We check flights in both directions and accommodation before adding the island to the trip.

An aerial view of London on Kiritimati. A narrow strip of land separates the lagoon from the ocean. Kiritimati is also known as Christmas Island in Kiribati.

Sunset over the lagoon of South Tarawa, Kiribati, with palms and a stilt bungalow by the sandy shore.

Nikita swimming in Tarawa’s lagoon, Kiribati, with palms and houses on the shore behind him.

A person in a bright shirt and sun hat gives a thumbs-up in the shallows of a Kiribati lagoon, with a palm-covered islet in the distance.

## How a trip could take shape.

Choose a place and a month. These outlines show how much time to allow, where to stay and what you could add. We agree the dates, route and cost for your group.

The months are a guide for planning. For Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, we choose dates to suit your route.

### Central Oceania: Nauru and Kiribati

Time to allow: At least two weeks. When to go: Dates follow the available island flights.

Based on our own journey

Nauru, Tarawa and Kiritimati can form a single journey. Planning starts with the flight timetable: distances are large and connections between islands are infrequent.

**Nauru**

Drive around the island to see its coast and interior. The number of nights depends on the next suitable onward flight.

**Tarawa**

Spend several days on the atoll, driving beside the lagoon and visiting villages and the ocean shore. Boat outings are arranged locally according to the weather.

**Kiritimati**

The lagoon, settlements and a few unhurried days. We check flights in both directions and accommodation before adding the island to the trip.

**Possible additions.** Tuvalu or a stay in Fiji if the timetable and your available time allow. You could also limit the journey to Nauru and Tarawa.

**Before booking.** Our previous route through Fiji is a reference, not a current flight schedule. We check every connection before agreeing dates.

Durations are planning estimates. Allow extra time for international travel and buffers between island flights. We check flights, accommodation and entry requirements before booking.
