Tonga

Tongatapu is a flat island of gardens, churches and the streets of Nuku‘alofa. On Sundays the town is quiet, and what you mostly hear is church singing. The northern group, Vava‘u, is a different kind of place: on the diagram it stands apart, and it is still a plan.

Planned

Vava‘u

Vava‘u is steep green islands, winding channels and the sheltered harbour of Neiafu. In the southern winter, humpback whales come into these waters with their calves, and there are caves in the cliffs that boats enter. We have not been yet: a trip there can be discussed.

A possible trip

How a trip
could take shape.

Tonga: Nuku‘alofa, Vava‘u and whales

9–12 daysJuly–October for humpback whales

We know Nuku‘alofa; Vava‘u is a new extension

Begin on Tongatapu in Nuku‘alofa, then fly to Vava‘u for humpback whales. Allow several days on the water: outings depend on the weather, and wildlife keeps its own timetable.

  1. Nuku‘alofa and Tongatapu · 2–3 days

The town, coastal blowholes and the stone gateway of Ha‘amonga ‘a Maui. A few days here also give you time to settle in after a long flight.

  2. Vava‘u · 5–6 days

Go out with a licensed operator to look for humpback whales, with snorkelling encounters where conditions and rules allow. On other days, choose reef snorkelling, a boat trip or a beach.

  3. Between the islands

We arrange domestic connections with a buffer before your international departure. Diving is planned separately from whale outings, with time allowed before your next flight.

Possible additions

Diving around Vava‘u, matched to your experience. A few days in Fiji before or after Tonga if the connections work.

Before booking

We first check operator availability, flights and accommodation. Boat trips and swimming with whales depend on conditions and the animals’ behaviour.

Durations are planning estimates. Allow extra time for international travel and buffers between island flights. We check flights, accommodation and entry requirements before booking.

The months are a guide for planning. For Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, we choose dates to suit your route.
